It’s not always the case, but often charity is easy, pleasant and effortless. That was the case last night underneath the Wilson Street Bridge off of Lake Shore Drive. Todd Hayes and I distributed socks, medical supplies, non-perishable food and hygiene items to about twelve homeless ranging in age between early twenties to mid-sixties. The items may not have had a long-term impact; but everyone was exceedingly thankful for supplies that they don’t normally have.
As many had skin infections and open wounds, the antibiotic wipes, triple antibiotic cream and sterile bandages were in high demand. Several had beginning stages of foot rot so the anti-fungal cream, foot powder and fresh socks were much needed. And without exception, all were hungry so the Pop Tarts, Vienna Sausages and Chef Boyardee went quickly.
